El ciclo de 819 días del calendario maya ha confundido a los estudiosos durante décadas, pero una nueva investigación muestra cómo coincide con los ciclos planetarios en un lapso de 45 años. Es la visión más amplia del sofisticado calendario que se ha logrado hasta ahora.
Cubriendo un período de 819 días, el ciclo se conoce simplemente como la cuenta de 819 días. El problema es que los investigadores no pudieron hacer coincidir ese conteo con nada.
Pero los antropólogos John Linden y Victoria Bricker de la Universidad de Tulane ahora creen que finalmente han descifrado el código.
Todo lo que tenían que hacer era ampliar su pensamiento, estudiando cómo funcionaba el calendario durante un período no de 819 días, sino de 45 años, y relacionarlo con el tiempo que tarda en aparecer un objeto celeste para volver aproximadamente al mismo punto del cielo —lo que se conoce como el período sinódico—.
«Aunque investigaciones previas han buscado mostrar conexiones planetarias para el conteo de 819 días, su esquema direccional de color de cuatro partes es demasiado corto para encajar bien con los períodos sinódicos de los planetas visibles», escriben en su artículo.
«Al aumentar la longitud del calendario a 20 períodos de 819 días, surge un patrón en el que los períodos sinódicos de todos los planetas visibles se corresponden con los puntos de estación en el calendario más grande de 819 días».
El calendario maya es en realidad un sistema complicado compuesto por calendarios más pequeños, desarrollado hace siglos en la Mesoamérica precolombina.
De los calendarios componentes, la cuenta de 819 días es la más desconcertante para los antropólogos modernos. Es un calendario basado en glifos que se repite cuatro veces, y cada bloque de 819 días se corresponde con uno de los cuatro colores y —según pensaron inicialmente los científicos— una dirección cardinal.
El rojo se asoció con el este, el blanco con el norte, el negro con el oeste y el amarillo con el sur. No fue hasta la década de 1980 que los investigadores se dieron cuenta de que esta suposición era incorrecta.
En cambio, el blanco y el amarillo se asociaron con el cenit y el nadir respectivamente, una interpretación que encaja con la astronomía, ya que el Sol sale por el este, viaja por el cielo hasta su punto más alto (cenit), se pone por el oeste y luego viaja a través de su nadir para levantarse de nuevo en el este.
Había otras pistas que sugerían que la cuenta de 819 días estaba asociada con los períodos sinódicos de los planetas visibles del sistema solar.
Los mayas tenían mediciones extremadamente precisas de los períodos sinódicos de los planetas visibles: Mercurio, Venus, Marte, Júpiter y Saturno.
Sin embargo, la dificultad residía en tratar de averiguar cómo funcionaban estos períodos sinódicos en el contexto de la cuenta de 819 días.
Mercurio es fácil; tiene un período sinódico de 117 días, que cabe en 819 días exactamente siete veces. Pero, ¿dónde encajaba el resto de los planetas?
Resulta que cada uno de los planetas visibles tiene un período sinódico que coincide exactamente con una cantidad de ciclos de la cuenta de 819 días.
El período sinódico de Venus es de 585 días; que coincide perfectamente con 7 conteos de 819 días. Marte tiene un período sinódico de 780 días; eso es exactamente 20 conteos de 819 días.
Júpiter y Saturno tampoco se quedan fuera. El período sinódico de 399 días de Júpiter encaja exactamente 39 veces en 19 cuentas; y el período sinódico de 378 días de Saturno es una combinación perfecta para 6 conteos.
E incluso hay un vínculo convincente con el calendario de 260 días conocido como el Tzolkin. Veinte períodos de 819 días es un total de 16.380 días. Si multiplicamos el Tzolkin por 63, obtenemos 16.380 días.
De hecho, 16.380 es el múltiplo más pequeño que tienen en común 260 y 819. Entonces, los dos se vinculan maravillosamente con el conteo de 819 días de 20 ciclos presentado por Linden y Bricker.

Cada vez que se requiere que los historiadores interpreten medidas significativas de orígenes antiguos, corren el riesgo de leer demasiado profundamente y atribuir valores erróneamente.
Eso no quiere decir que la propuesta de Linden y Bricker sea numerología disfrazada de academia, aunque es importante dejar que la ciencia haga su trabajo y estar atento a las críticas y refutaciones.
Aún así, el calendario maya está lejos de ser un sistema simple basado en astronomía básica. No debería sorprendernos en absoluto que la medida maya del cosmos abarcara una extensión tan grande de espacio y tiempo.

Pero el ritualismo mágico tiene todavía un origen más antiguo, ya que Babilonia en su mayoría los heredo de los antiguos habitantes de Mesopotamia, que se supone refinar con las primeras y básicas ceremonias humanas en el ara dísimo rituales llenos de reglas, especificaciones y donde nada estaba librado al azar, que fueron los verdaderos antepasados del ritual y la ceremonia.
